A common misunderstanding about individuals living with HIV often surfaces in the question: "Would you be willing to share a cup with a relative who is HIV positive?"

For many people living with HIV, the hardest battle is not taking medication or attending clinic appointments; it is facing the judgment of others. This is despite treatment advancing, and millions of South Africans are living healthy lives with HIV.

However, stigma and discrimination continue to cast a long shadow. Fear of being labelled, isolated or treated differently often forces people to suffer in silence, highlighting a challenge that medicine alone cannot cure.

An anonymous community member shared her experience, "When I was diagnosed, I was more afraid of what people would say than of the virus itself. I knew treatment was available, but I worried about being judged by my family and community."
