(Image source: X @addisstandard)The death toll from a passenger bus crash in Ethiopia's Amhara region has risen to 31, authorities said on Monday, as rescue teams continued recovery operations and treatment of the injured.The bus, which was travelling from Dessie to the capital Addis Ababa, plunged into a 100-metre-deep ravine after veering off the road. Dozens of passengers were injured in the accident, with several reported to be in serious condition.Rescue operations underwaySurvivors were transported to nearby hospitals and medical facilities for treatment, while emergency responders continued search and recovery efforts at the crash site.An investigation has also been launched to determine the cause of the crash and establish how the vehicle left the road.Road accidents a persistent concernFatal road accidents remain a recurring problem in Ethiopia, where poor road infrastructure, ageing vehicles and inadequate safety standards have contributed to high traffic-related death rates.The latest incident is among the deadliest road accidents reported in the country this year.In December 2024, around 66 people were killed when a vehicle carrying wedding guests plunged into a river in the Sidama Region, AP reported.
