'It is important that the world does not remain silent in response to this latest act of Russian barbarism,' Zelenskyy said

Russia damaged a historic monastery complex in a massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine last night, as the EU prepared to formally open long-delayed accession talks with the war-torn country on Monday.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s president, said on social media that Moscow’s barrage included a total of 70 missiles and 611 drones, with 60 missiles targeting Kyiv alone. Eleven people were killed and 53 people were injured in the attack, he added.

The barrage also set fire to the roof of the Dormition Cathedral, which is part of the 1,000-year-old Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery complex: a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site and major tourist site in the heart of Ukraine’s capital city.

“It is important that the world does not remain silent in response to this latest act of Russian barbarism,” Zelenskyy wrote on X. “This strike on the Lavra is an attack on the Christian community and on the cultural heritage of humanity.”
