Experts reveal 10 steps you can take if you want to stand out and get hired faster in today's complicated, confusing and crowded AI-driven hiring market.gettyToday’s job seekers face a hiring landscape transformed and driven by AI, flooded with applications, plagued by ghosting and characterized by mistrust. The result is a job search process that many workers describe as exhausting, mentally draining and, at times, demoralizing—making job search burnout real.More than half of U.S. job seekers spend six months or more sending resumes into the void. For the two percent who make it to an interview, the battle is often lost before it begins—33% of employers decide within the first 90 seconds. Why The Job Search Is So DifficultRecently, I wrote a story for Forbes.com about how to move through the hiring process more quickly, highlighting which high-volume jobs employers are filling the fastest. New data now suggests the challenge is no longer simply finding open positions. It’s figuring out how to stand out in a crowded, AI-assisted labor market where candidates and employers are struggling to connect authentically.According to Resume Genius’s 2026 Job Search Statistics Report, 67% of job seekers have suspected that a job posting was fake, misleading or never intended to be filled. More than half say not hearing back after submitting applications is among their biggest frustrations, while 49% report that job searching has negatively affected their mental health. At the same time, AI is reshaping both sides of the hiring equation. Monster’s 2026 Graduate AI Readiness Report found that 89% of graduates worry AI could replace entry-level jobs, while only 36% feel their education is preparing them to use AI effectively in the workplace.MORE FOR YOUThe message is clear: job seekers need more than a polished resume. They need a strategy that combines technology, authenticity and human connection. According to labor market data cited in the Resume Genius report, there were approximately 6.9 million job openings compared to 7.6 million unemployed workers in early 2026. Meanwhile, one in four unemployed workers had been searching for 27 weeks or longer.Compounding the challenge is the growing use of AI throughout the hiring process. Greenhouse research reports that nearly two-thirds of job seekers have now experienced AI interviews, yet most were not informed beforehand that AI would be evaluating them. More than half never received follow-up communication afterward. This creates an environment where candidates often feel they are competing against algorithms while simultaneously trying to impress human decision-makers.10 Ways To Separate Yourself From The Competition1. Develop A Powerful 20-Second Elevator PitchFirst impressions still matter. Prudence Leung, psychotherapist and resident expert at EduBirdie, suggests that employers often begin forming opinions within the first moments of an interview. She says a concise, well-rehearsed introduction can immediately establish confidence and credibility.Rather than reciting your entire work history, she recommends focusing on three elements: your professional identity, your core strengths and why you’re a strong fit for the role. The goal isn't perfection. It's clarity.2. Research Beyond The Job DescriptionToo many candidates stop at reading the posting. Joe Patterson, vice president of workforce and community education at National University, recommends examining LinkedIn profiles, recent hires, leadership teams and company strategy documents. He believes understanding where the organization is headed allows you to position yourself as someone who can help solve future challenges rather than simply fill a vacancy.3. Tell Stories Instead Of Listing ResponsibilitiesInterviewers hear endless descriptions of tasks and duties. What they rarely hear are compelling stories that demonstrate impact. When discussing previous work, explain the problem you faced, the action you took and the outcome you achieved. More importantly, explain why it mattered. Experienced candidates don't simply describe what they did. They demonstrate how they created value. As Dan Kejsefman, talent director at AVATURE, explains, "The strongest candidates are not the ones who say the most, but the ones who clearly connect their experience to what the role actually requires." 4. Learn To Navigate Ambiguous QuestionsMany interviewers intentionally ask vague questions to assess judgment and adaptability, according to Leung, and many applicants hesitate to ask for clarification. Instead of appearing confused, she advises you consider responding with something like: “I can interpret that question in two different ways. Which direction would you like me to take?” This simple technique demonstrates confidence, composure and critical thinking under uncertainty.5. Use AI As A Tool, Not A CrutchAI can be incredibly helpful for mock interviews, resume reviews and brainstorming responses. But relying on it too heavily can backfire. According to Resume Genius, 80% of hiring managers say they can often identify AI-generated resumes. The strongest applications still reflect authentic experiences, personal insights and original thinking. AI should enhance your voice, not replace it.6. Avoid The "Good Enough" TrapAndrew Smith of Click Consult cautions that AI-generated search results may encourage job seekers to settle for opportunities that appear "good enough," rather than finding roles that truly align with their strengths and goals. He suggests before applying, ask yourself whether the position genuinely advances your career aspirations or merely appeared at the top of an AI-generated recommendation.7. Lead With Adaptability And Learning AgilityKris Erickson, author of The Enduring Impact, argues that flexibility, adaptability and continuous learning have become essential career assets. Employers understand that technology will continue changing. They’re looking for people who are capable of evolving alongside it, Erickson asserts, adding that the candidates who succeed aren't necessarily those with every technical skill today. They're the ones who demonstrate the capacity to learn tomorrow's skills quickly.8. Demonstrate TrustworthinessAs interview fraud and AI-assisted deception become more common, authenticity has become a competitive advantage. Adithyan RK, founder of Hyring, notes that employers value candidates who demonstrate honesty, professionalism and sound judgment over those who simply deliver polished answers. He points out that small actions—arriving prepared, listening carefully, admitting when you don’t know something and responding thoughtfully—can significantly strengthen your credibility.9. Ask Better QuestionsPatterson says the questions you ask often reveal more than the answers you give. Instead of focusing solely on compensation or benefits, he suggests that you ask about challenges facing the team, organizational priorities or what success looks like during the first year. These conversations help interviewers envision you as a future colleague rather than simply another applicant.10. End With Radical TransparencyOne of the most powerful interview strategies may also be the most uncomfortable. Before concluding, Leung suggests that you ask: “Is there anything about my background or candidacy that gives you hesitation and that I can clarify before we finish?” She explains that this question demonstrates confidence, emotional maturity and openness to feedback. It also creates an opportunity to address concerns before they become reasons for rejection. The Human Advantage In An AI WorldThe irony of AI-driven hiring is that as technology becomes more sophisticated, human qualities become more valuable. For job seekers feeling discouraged, that’s encouraging news. While technology is changing the hiring process, success still comes down to something fundamentally human: demonstrating that you can solve problems, build relationships and contribute meaningfully to an organization's future.
