Agriculture Minister Plamen Abrovski has said that Bulgarian producers have been left without adequate state support for decades, pointing to systemic neglect over the past 30 years in comments made during an interview with BNT.
He stated that this long-standing lack of attention toward farmers and domestic producers is the reason the government has now introduced legislative measures aimed at strengthening local production and providing greater institutional backing.
Abrovski also referred to the “Care Basket” initiative, noting that following its announcement, authorities began receiving reports alleging pressure on producers in the market. He stressed the need to ensure that Bulgarian farmers are protected from such practices.
According to the minister, he personally reached out to affected producers and invited them to a meeting to discuss their concerns directly.
He recounted their response, saying, “For the last 30 years they had only listened to promises and no one had taken care of them.” He also added that he asked them why they had not approached him earlier.
