South Korea’s data protection agency, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC), has fined e-commerce giant Coupang more than £300 million, following a breach that exposed the personal data of about two-thirds of the country’s population.
The fine, the PIPC’s largest ever, is the maximum that could be imposed, reflecting poor data-management practices that allowed the breach to take place, the agency said.

The fine announced on 10 June included 423.6bn won (£212m) for the breach itself, and an additional 201bn won for the collection of personal data without consent.
