MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila University President Fr. Roberto Yap and officials of Smart Communications will be subpoenaed over the fatal drowning of men’s basketball players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said on Monday.
“We learned also from the university athletics office that the Ateneo basketball team is allegedly autonomous and independently run by a foundation. The program planning and funding are being handled by the foundation, which is Smart Communications,” CIDG Director Maj. Gen. Robert Morico II said in a press briefing at Camp Crame.
“We will be issuing subpoenas in the next few days,” he added.
