Minneapolis is a city of memorials. On Nicollet Avenue, flowers and picket signs line the fences marking where Alex Pretti – an intensive care nurse and proud trade unionist – was gunned down by border patrol agents in January.
Just weeks before, Donald Trump’s paramilitary-style Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) forces had killed Renee Good – a 37-year-old mother of three who was monitoring their activity as a legal observer. And five years earlier, police in the city had unlawfully killed George Floyd, sparking protests around the world. Flowers, banners and messages of solidarity bear witness to their murders.
