Srinagar: Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU), led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, on Sunday held a meeting of the Shia-Sunni coordination committee ahead of the holy month of Muharram, asserting that any attempt to create sectarian discord or disturb the atmosphere of brotherhood would not be tolerated.MMU said the Shia-Sunni coordination committee would keep a watch on social media space and counter any attempts by disruptive elements to undermine sectarian harmony, especially during the month of Muharram when the Shia community organises several programmes and takes out processions to remember the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) who was killed in the battle of Karbala in 680 CE.The meeting chaired by Aga Syed Mujtaba was held at the headquarters of Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid in Srinagar. MMU is an amalgam of over 50 religious organisations across J&K and Ladakh. The meeting was attended by leading scholars, religious leaders, and representatives of various religious organisations. The participants emphasised that, in view of the challenges confronting the Muslim Ummah at the local, national and international levels, it is imperative to strengthen unity, mutual respect and inter-sectarian understanding and harmony.
