New Delhi: US President Donald Trump and PM Narendra Modi are likely to meet on Wednesday in France amid repeated US attacks on merchant ships carrying Indians in the Gulf of Oman. They last met in February 2025.On Saturday, the White House announced that Trump will meet Modi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France. There was no word from the Indian side on this proposed meeting.Meanwhile, an Indian-flagged dhow sank off the Oman coast following a mechanical failure, and all 14 crew members were rescued on Sunday, officials said. Indian embassy in Muscat stated on Sunday, "Rescue operation involving Indian-flagged MSV Virat 1 has been successfully completed. All 14 crew members have been rescued and are presently onboard Jabal Ali 9 heading to Mumbai. A US Navy P-8 maritime patrol aircraft responded to the crisis by dropping a life raft near the vessel.Last week India had twice summoned US Cd'A to register strong protest following Indian casualties after US military attacks on vessels off the Gulf of Oman and handed over a demarche. Later external affairs minister S Jaishankar spoke with his American counterpart Marco Rubio to register a protest. But the US side defended its actions.As per the US state department, Rubio told Jaishankar that violations of the American blockade and the "illicit transport" of Iranian oil through the Strait of Hormuz "will not be tolerated" and insisted that commercial vessels must comply with instructions issued by the US forces. The US attacks on ships carrying Indians have soured bilateral ties.India-US ties have entered a difficult phase following Operation Sindoor, and the US administration's decision to impose heavy tariffs on India and court Pakistan.
