LAS VEGAS — Less than four days after he’d left the interview room at T-Mobile Arena, Rod Brind’Amour was back. This time, the circumstances had changed. The Carolina Hurricanes, by virtue of a 4-2 win at Lenovo Center on Thursday, now hold a 3-2 lead on the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final.Brind’Amour’s Saturday had actually started in North Carolina.“We had a nice day off at home, if you want to call it that. Then you have to come in and do this stuff,” Brind’Amour said. “We had a nice little practice (on Saturday morning) and then jumped on a plane to get here. I’m not a big fan of spending more time on the road than you have to.”No matter what happens in Game 6, it’s Carolina’s last road game of the season. Vegas, meanwhile, would love to play another. Here are three keys for each team ahead of Sunday night.Vegas Golden Knights1. How strong is John Tortorella’s stomach? It’s nice that everyone had a laugh at what Tortorella called “the stupidest question” he’d ever heard after Game 5, but lost in the shuffle was the fact that he didn’t actually say whether he did (or didn’t) consider swapping out Carter Hart for Adin Hill. Great soundbite. Still a non-answer.On Saturday, Tortorella removed all doubt: Hart, despite extending his record-setting streak of four-plus-goal games to five, is going to start Sunday. He worked with Vegas director of goaltending Sean Burke on Saturday rather than participating in an optional practice with the rest of the team, which guaranteed that Tortorella would again face the question, and the answer didn’t change. Asked whether Hill’s presence on the roster made the decision any more difficult, Tortorella dropped a one-word response —”No” — and moved things along.Later, Tortorella was asked what about Hart has inspired such a high level of confidence.“Because I know him,” Tortorella said. “I know there’s a better game in him. I’ve seen it throughout the playoffs. Yeah, I think he’s a very good goalie. We’ve gotta do a better job around him, too. You can look at the numbers — and you guys, that’s what you do, you spit out those numbers — but I’ve got to look at things differently, and watch what the play is going on around him.”Fair enough. At the risk of spitting out more numbers, Hart has still allowed between four and five goals more than expected over the course of the series, and Vegas’ margin for error is about as small as it gets. This much is true: If Tortorella were considering a change, there’d be no reason for him to even hint at it. He’s incentivized to lie here for plenty of reasons. But if Hart allows an early squeaker or two — and based on his recent performance, that’s a real possibility — we’ll see just how committed Tortorella is to the bit.2. Can Mitch Marner restart his Conn Smythe push? There’s no way to say this without sounding like we’re trying to relitigate Marner’s past playoff performances or diminish his work with Vegas thus far, but … everyone who said that he might’ve locked up playoff MVP after Game 3, regardless of the series’ result, appears to have jumped the gun.
Three keys for Hurricanes and Golden Knights in Game 6 with Stanley Cup on the line
Carolina looks to close out the series and claim its second Stanley Cup title, while Vegas looks to stay alive and force Game 7.
