CLEVELAND — José Ramírez approached a small group of teammates in the corner of the Cleveland Guardians’ clubhouse Saturday evening and relayed the news that he has a fractured left hamate bone. He assured them they’ll be fine without him for the immediate future.Ramírez then showered, changed into street clothes and exited the clubhouse with his usual, fast-paced strut and with a splint protecting his left wrist. The Guardians, who climbed back into first place in the AL Central with their 3-1 win against the Detroit Tigers, will be without the face of their franchise for an extended period. Manager Stephen Vogt wouldn’t offer a specific timetable. When Ramírez fractured his right hamate bone in 2019, the team projected he would miss five to seven weeks. Ramírez was back in the lineup in exactly one month, and he slugged a grand slam and a three-run homer in his first two trips to the plate upon his return.Ramírez suffered Saturday’s injury on a fifth-inning swing. He volunteered to patrol third base until his next at-bat rolled around, but he couldn’t squeeze his glove.“José, for years and years and years, has carried us,” catcher Austin Hedges said, “but what makes us great is the rest of the guys who feed off of his energy and the leader that he is. He makes everybody around him great, so now it’s those guys’ turn to pick him up like he always does for us.”Ramírez, who has started each of Cleveland’s 72 games this season, was actually the third member of the starting lineup to leave the game early, following Chase DeLauter and Angel Martínez to the trainer’s table. One by one, they disappeared as if they were golden-ticket-clutching kids at Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.DeLauter suffered a right rib cage contusion in the top of the first inning when he slammed into the right-field wall. He stayed in long enough to supply a single in the bottom half of the frame, but he grabbed at his side on his jog to first base, and Vogt and a trainer promptly emerged from the dugout to usher him off the field. DeLauter underwent a scan after the game, and the team is expected to provide an update on his status Sunday morning.
