The Karnataka State Police Complaints Authority (KSPCA) has urged the State police head to introduce special welfare measures for pregnant women police officers and personnel, including exemption from weekly parade duties and the provision of a mandatory weekly off.The KSPCA proposed that women police personnel with children below the age of three should not be assigned night shifts, citing childcare responsibilities and the need to ensure the welfare of both mother and child. In a letter addressed to the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police (DGP & IGP), KSPCA member Mohan Kumar Danappa highlighted the unique challenges faced by pregnant women serving in the police force and called for a humane approach. The letter noted that while weekly parades and drills are essential for maintaining discipline and physical fitness, such strenuous activities may pose health risks to pregnant personnel and their unborn children. It pointed out that the demanding nature of police work, often involving round-the-clock duties, can adversely affect the health and well-being of expectant mothers.Mr. Danappa recommended that pregnant officers be exempted from weekly parade activities and be granted a compulsory weekly holiday during pregnancy. He also suggested that they be spared from physically demanding assignments, including duties involving rallies, protests, law-and-order bandobast, high-noise environments, and weapons-related responsibilities, except in unavoidable emergency situations.Referring to similar welfare measures reportedly adopted by the Chandigarh Police, the KSPCA urged the Police Department to formulate appropriate guidelines and implement them across the State in the interest of women personnel and their families.
