The Animal Husbandry Department is set to intensify fixing of fresh digital tags and uploading and validation of the existing database on cows and buffaloes in the districts as part of the National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM).The tags would serve as the Aadhaar cards for the heads of cattle. Once tagged and assigned a 12-digit identification number, complete details of the cow/buffalo can be accessed by scanning the tag.Employees of the Animal Husbandry Department would fan out to the villages in the afternoons from next week to register the details of cows and buffaloes, including calves. The name of the owner, its breed, date of birth/age, sex, and details of vaccinations done and details of disease and the treatment done for each animal would be uploaded in the database. The tags would be linked to the Aadhaar and the mobile phone number of the owners of the cattle. Owners would be required to provide the One Time Password (OTP) to the staff to validate the details registered.“It is important that the owners provide the OTP to the visiting staff; otherwise, the data cannot be validated,” a senior official of the department said. Tiruchi District Collector Pratik Tayal has appealed to owners of cows and buffaloes to extend their cooperation for the tagging and data registration and validation.Tiruchi district has an estimated 3.23 lakh cows and buffaloes and of them, nearly 3 lakh have been tagged during various rounds of vaccinations done previously. Some farmers have removed the tags and such animals, besides those acquired from other districts and calves would be tagged afresh. “The existing tags would now be used for updating the data,” the official said.Explaining the advantages of tagging, the official said that prospective buyers can access the “entire bio-data” of a cow/buffalo just by scanning the tag.
