Dylan Edwards put a hand to his forehead and felt the gushing blood. The 20-year-old forward was celebrating an Ontario Hockey League championship with his Kitchener Rangers teammates last month, skating around Sadlon Arena in Barrie, Ont., after their clinching victory. But his left eyebrow, nose and jersey were stained red as though he had been part of a bench-clearing brawl. And he didn’t know why.Despite the injury, Edwards still basked in the glow. He joined teammates in a joyous huddle, his blood leaking onto their jerseys. In between on-ice interviews, the 5-foot-8 Edwards received treatment from team medical personnel — as well as a game towel wrapped around his forehead by a trainer.“It didn’t really feel that bad, because, I guess, the adrenaline was going,” said Edwards, who needed four stitches to treat the laceration. As it turned out, Edwards had been victimized by friendly fire: Amid a flurry of flying equipment during the Rangers’ celebration, Edwards’ forehead was struck by the stick of Kitchener goalie Christian Kirsch. But he didn’t even learn about the origins of his bloody cut until after it had gone viral.Video of the moment, posted to social media via TSN’s BarDown platform, has since received nearly 100,000 views across Instagram, Facebook and other platforms. The video’s caption labeled Edwards as a “Certified Hockey Guy” for embodying the sport’s stereotypical warrior ethos.
