The bunker takes a look at it and rule out a penalty try, but instead Sanders is sent to the sin bin for a professional foul. With Sanders’ usual halves partner Ethan Strange away on Origin duty, the Raiders are very light on playmaking experience for the next 10 minutes. The Eels attack Sanders’ usual place in the defensive line immediately and second-rower Kitione Kautoga crashes through, reaches out and … drops the ball over the line. Or does he? The ball rolls out of his grasp as he tries to slam it down on the tryline, but the on-field referee awards the try. The bunker takes a look, and it’s very close, but the try is confirmed. That looks like a tough call on the Raiders but the Eels won’t mind one but, and they are in a great spot – even after a couple of missed conversion attempts.Eels 8, Raiders 0 after 26 minutes7.57pmMore errors, more great Parramatta defence as Raiders frustrated By It’s becoming a bit of an error-fest now, a Kitione Kautoga mistake giving Canberra yet another set inside Parramatta’s 20-metre zone. It feels like the Raiders have been camped down there for most of this game.Again the Eels defend well though, and Josh Addo-Carr is on the spot to dive on a Daine Laurie grubber into the in-goal.And Parramatta escapes again, with the short dropout bouncing inside the 10 metres and then travels past the 10-metre line and over the sideline, meaning the Eels get the ball back. Ricky Stuart looks furious on the sideline. The Raiders have dominated the territorial battle but they’ll need to be a bit more incisive in attack to take advantage of that.Eels 4, Raiders 0 after 19 minutes7.53pmRaiders on the attack again but errors bring them undoneBy The Eels’ first set after points comes to a premature end when Jack Williams knocks on in his own half, then after the Raiders turn it straight back over Jack de Belin is pinged for offside. Another set restart gives Canberra a fresh set on the Eels’ line, but a hard, flat pass from Ethan Sanders is put down by Matthew Timoko with the tryline begging.Eels 4, Raiders 0 after 15 minutes7.49pmTRY: Samrani opens scoring for EelsBy After showing some real grit in defence at one end, the Eels have gone down the other end to open the scoring in this one.A right-side shift ends with Brian Kelly seemingly tackled over the sideline, but the winger manages to keep his arm off the sideline and it’s play on. Then Jordan Samrani darts out of dummy-half and dives over to score near the right corner.Joash Papali’i pushes his conversion attempt wide but it’s a very encouraging start for the home side.Eels 4, Raiders 0 after 12 minutes7.43pmParra’s goal-line defence holds up after three straight Raiders setsBy The Iongi error gives Canberra their first chance to strike and a back-breaking six-again call against Parramatta on the last tackle means the visitors are camped in Eels territory for a dozen straight tackles. That set ends with Ethan Sanders rolling a grubber into the in-goal, Joash Papali’i gets to it first but is immediately tackled and the Raiders force a goal-line dropout. The Eels send it long – short dropouts aren’t quite as in vogue as they were last season – and Canberra end their next set with another Sanders grubber but this time Ronald Volkman snaps it up in the field of play and Parramatta survive after some excellent work in defence.Eels 0, Raiders 0 after seven minutes7.39pmKick-offBy The Raiders get this one started and Jack Williams takes the first hit-up of the game for Parramatta. Ronald Volkman gets a good kick away after a solid first set from the home side. It’s safety-first stuff from Canberra in their first set as well, milestone man Joe Tapine taking the ball past the Raiders’ 40-metre line before former Eel Ethan Sanders puts in a kick on the fourth tackle. The Eels make it into Canberra territory on their next set, but fullback Isaiah Iongi spills a Kitione Kautoga offload for the first error of the game.Eels 0, Raiders 0 after three minutes7.36pmJoe Tapine leads out Raiders in his 250thBy It’s the 250th NRL game for star Raiders and Kiwis prop Joe Tapine, and he takes the field with family to lead out the Green Machine. It’s really a must-win match for the Raiders, who need to win the bulk of their games from here on in to make the finals from 13th place, having been minor premiers last season. And the Eels have plenty to play for as well, having slumped to three losses on the trot.No Mitch Moses for Parra is cancelled out by Canberra missing Ethan Strange and Hudson Young, but the Raiders are still the favourites to get the result here, even in Parramatta. But we’ve just seen an upset in Auckland, so don’t be shocked if we get another tonight at CommBank Stadium.7.25pmWatch: Will Kennedy’s match-saving charge downBy Sensational stuff from the Sharks fullback as his team earned a narrow win over the Warriors today. And here’s Braydon Trindall’s match-winning field goal.7.22pmThe early game: Trindall earns Sharks gritty win over WarriorsBy There’s a chaotic finish to today’s early game, with Braydon Trindall blasting a two-point field goal from 45 metres out to win the match for Cronulla against the Warriors, after Will Kennedy pulled off an audacious charge-down to block a Te Maire Martin field goal attempt – and somehow Kennedy caught the ball in the process. The Warriors then had the chance to send the game into extra time when Sione Katoa was penalised for an early tackle, but Adam Pompey’s kick at goal went wide. And after all that, the scoreline finished 10-8 – the kind of low-scoring contest we haven’t seen many of this season. We’ll bring you some highlights from that game when we have them.Jesse Ramien celebrates his try against the Warriors.Getty Images1 of 2
