Just like the conman in Bollywood's Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, a man allegedly spent years winning the trust of women through promises of marriage, only to cheat them out of their money. Police said Anujkumar Chandraprakash Trivedi posed as an ideal groom on matrimonial platforms and allegedly married and conned more than 25 women across multiple states in a fraud worth several crores.As per a PTI report, investigators claimed that he specifically targeted divorced and vulnerable women, using fake identities and emotional manipulation to carry out what they described as one of the country's most shocking matrimonial scams.Arrested from Greater Noida after years on the runSpeaking to PTI, Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Doiphode said the accused was tracked down to Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh.Police arrested him on May 24 after discovering that he had been living under a fake identity.Investigators found that he operated using multiple aliases, including Ajay Agarwal, Ajay Santosh Singh and Jaiprakash Rameshchand Gupta.How the alleged matrimonial scam unfoldedThe case came to light after a 75-year-old woman approached Nayanagar police in March 2022.According to the complaint, the accused responded to a matrimonial advertisement seeking a match for her 45-year-old daughter. Introducing himself as Ajay Agarwal, he allegedly married the woman in March 2019.Police said that after gaining the family's confidence, he convinced the complainant to sell her flat in Mira Road. He reportedly promised to buy a new property and build a two-storey house elsewhere.Over time, the family allegedly handed over Rs 82 lakh in cash.Jewellery stolen during Delhi trip, police allegeInvestigators said the accused later took the victim to Delhi under the pretext of attending a relative's wedding.At a railway station, he allegedly fled with 33 tolas of jewellery before forcing the woman onto a train bound for Mumbai.Police claim he then switched off his phone and disappeared.According to investigators, the complainant and her daughter lost around Rs 97 lakh in the alleged fraud.More than 25 women allegedly targetedDuring the investigation, police uncovered what they describe as a larger pattern of deception.Officials believe Trivedi used matrimonial websites and newspaper advertisements to identify women who were divorced, disabled, mentally challenged or otherwise vulnerable.Police said he would gain their trust by presenting himself as a caring and supportive partner before allegedly cheating them financially.Investigators suspect that more than 25 women may have fallen victim to the same scheme.Luxury car bought with fraud money seizedPolice said some of the money allegedly obtained through fraud was used to purchase a luxury car worth around Rs 20 lakh.The vehicle has now been seized as part of the investigation.Authorities also recovered three mobile phones, an ATM card and a fake Aadhaar card bearing the name "Jaiprakash Gupta" from the accused.Son named as co-accusedThe investigation has also led police to the accused's son, who has been named as a co-accused in the case.Officials allege that he helped his father carry out parts of the fraud operation.Police further discovered that Trivedi was wanted in another cheating case registered in Amravati, where he allegedly used a different identity to cheat a woman of Rs 25 lakh.Police appeal to more victims to come forwardThe accused is currently in judicial custody while the investigation continues.Police have appealed to women and families who may have been cheated by the accused to contact authorities and share information.Investigators believe additional victims could emerge as the case unfolds, potentially making it one of the larger matrimonial fraud cases uncovered in recent years.Inputs from agencies
