A little bit of Chelsea arrives in Kansas City over the weekend, a very deliberate aspect of Thomas Tuchel’s England reign. The manager has spent 18 months curating a club team environment and the proof of how meticulous that has been will become evident on the pitches at the party’s base at Swope Soccer Village, home for the next month.Two-thirds of the frontline coaching team are from Chelsea’s Champions League triumph in 2021 and it has been noticeable that Tuchel opted for that nucleus – led by assistant Anthony Barry, the former Yeovil Town midfielder turned set-piece philosopher – rather than leaning on the German expertise of somebody like long-standing confidante Arno Michels, who had been part of Tuchel's Bayern Munich set-up alongside Barry. With more Chelsea alumni – goalkeeping coach Hilario and lead analyst James Melbourne – part of the six-strong team, this is beginning to look like Missouri-by-Cobham.With Justin Cochrane, the part-time coach whose pre-existing relationships with Noni Madueke and Ivan Toney give him that added connection with the squad, there are three Englishmen in this group. As someone so strident and unerring, whether nationality meant something to Tuchel is debatable but the Chelsea links cannot be disputed and he has been trying to recreate the togetherness that brought European silverware to Stamford Bridge. They are a tight-knit group and forever together. Only Barry and French performance coach Nicolas Mayer survived from Bayern, meanwhile. Meet the crack team who Tuchel has entrusted to bring an end to 60 years of hurt.England manager Thomas Tuchel (right) with his coaching staff (from left) goalkeeping coach Henrique Hilario, performance coach Nicolas Mayer, coach Justin Cochrane, lead analyst James Melbourne and assistant head coach Anthony BarryANTHONY BARRYRole: Assistant coach; Nationality: English; Age: 40; Previous coaching jobs: Accrington Stanley (youth), Wigan Athletic, Chelsea, Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Portugal, Bayern Munich. In footage of training sessions over the coming weeks, Barry will be seen leading – even if Tuchel is more hands-on than a typical modern manager. The 40-year-old has assumed the role of trusted lieutenant, talking for hours with Tuchel at Cafe Mio in Munich once technical director John McDermott had floated the idea of succeeding Gareth Southgate in late 2024. The pair of them, who had grown close in Surrey, ended up singing along to Coldplay’s A Sky Full of Stars over coffee, altering the lyrics to reflect adding another World Cup star above the England crest.‘There is no other coach in the world I would’ve left Chelsea for,’ Barry reflected when Tuchel asked him to make the move to Bavaria. The Liverpudlian talks of Tuchel’s movie-star quality and aura but has not been afraid to challenge his boss. However, they almost never even met as Fleetwood Town, whom Barry played for during an injury-blighted career, offered him the manager’s job in the weeks before Tuchel’s unveiling at Chelsea.Barry was in Michael Carrick’s Pro Licence cohort, during which he wrote a dissertation on 16,000 throw-ins that was published as an academic paper. He had cut his coaching teeth with the Under 16s at Accrington Stanley while still playing under Paul Cook, who would later take him to Wigan Athletic. ‘I knew I'd fallen in love with it straightaway,’ Barry reminisced on a first ever coaching session when the balls were flat. ‘I got a better feeling that night than I did from playing at Wembley.’ To be fair, his Wembley experience was Yeovil’s League One play-off defeat by Blackpool in 2007.On the advice of former Wigan chairman David Sharpe, Roberto Martinez would ultimately entrust Barry with a key international role for both Belgium and Portugal. From Accrington’s kids to Kevin De Bruyne and Cristiano Ronaldo with some Harry Kane in there for good measure. A midfielder in the lower divisions and non-League but who prides himself on being bold. He can hold a room, Cochrane, and in a talk laced with self-deprecation for a firm in London, he presented two perfect examples of his character. The first was as a player for non-league Hayes in 2002. He was suspended for a game at St Albans but went to watch anyway, sidling up to a scout from Crewe Alexandra. After finding that the scout was there to see a St Albans player, he retorted: ‘You should be watching me.’Even when Cochrane was politely reminded of his suspension, he chewed the scout’s ear off. Crewe eventually watched him half a dozen times, the scout picked up by Cochrane’s father at King’s Cross to drive to one match in Enfield, and later signed him on a free transfer. Non-League to the Championship in one fell swoop. The other tale came seven years later, while completing a B licence alongside ex-Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna – then in Tottenham’s academy. Cochrane brazenly asked if there were any jobs at Spurs. McKenna spoke to academy manager McDermott and the rest is history.Without that interview with McDermott, a start to life in coaching that took him from Spurs to Manchester United, Thomas Frank’s Brentford and then back to Spurs with Frank, Cochrane is not in America this summer. He’s been in the FA’s coaching pathway for some time, overseeing a number of age groups and having learned under Steve Cooper and Southgate. McDermott has been one of his biggest champions.Cochrane’s coaching journey actually started at 17 by forming a team in north London’s Edmonton for eight-year-olds who weren’t getting picked in other grassroots teams and he now has a degree in leadership management, becoming more involved with England since Frank was sacked by Tottenham. He has spoken openly about his wife Leeanne, who died of thyroid cancer 18 months ago, leaving behind their three young boys. The work in America will be for her and for them. The coaching journey of Cochrane started at 17 when he formed a team in north London’s Edmonton for eight-year-olds who weren’t getting picked in other grassroots teamsNICOLAS MAYERRole: Performance coach; Nationality: French; Age: 44; Previous coaching jobs: Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern MunichAlongside Cochrane, Mayer will sometimes act as a shadow defender during training sessions, especially when England are attempting to craft the underlaps to unlock stubborn defences. And Mayer is a student, one for swapping ideas and bouncing around ideas. He is a graduate of the High Performance Football Coaching degree in Lisbon that was backed by Jose Mourinho and honed the management skills of Ruben Amorim. Mayer remains in touch with Pep Guardiola’s former assistant and now Braga boss Carlos Vicens from that course in 2018, with the pair exchanging footballing theories. Mayer undertook the studies while working for Tuchel at Paris Saint-Germain (previous head of performance Martin Buchheit was jettisoned after a personality clash) and went on to Bayern.Mayer has the buzzwords attached to him – precise, attention to detail – and is effectively head of his department in all but name, acting as a bridge between the medical staff and Tuchel. Mayer and Tuchel mess around during England training. Previously analysts would feed directly into coaches but now it funnels to Melbourne, who will be taking footage and presentations from a hub of analysts back at St George’s Park.Opposition scouting will be done remotely from there, whereas Southgate had utilised the likes of Under-21 boss Lee Carsley to be on the ground at previous tournaments.Melbourne, whose playing career ended in the Grimsby Town youth team before becoming crucial to Chelsea for two decades, will need to sift through that to offer digestible clips. With the Blues, he worked in video analysis for the big names – Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Rafael Benitez and Guus Hiddink – and then stepped up to chief analyst from Antoino Conte onwards. When Tuchel arrived, analyst Benjamin Weber, who had been with him from the Mainz days, came in above Melbourne – the German acting as that now familiar bridge, Melbourne preparing files, Weber delivering – before the world of sporting directorship took on an appeal. He’s now at Augsburg in the Bundesliga.Perhaps Weber’s switch in roles just months after his sacking – along with Tuchel – at Chelsea gave Melbourne an advantage for the England gig. Melbourne was part of the team that masterminded the Champions League win over Manchester City in that 2021 final, unsettling the favourites by defending in a 5-2-3 formation, pressing high. Those who worked with him at Chelsea remark at how quickly he built trust with various head coaches. Hilario, who had been at Cobham almost as long as Melbourne – first as a third-choice keeper and then coach – is much like the video whizz in wanting to remain in the shadows. Goalkeeper coach Hilario works with England No1 Jordan Pickford in Florida Such was Hilario’s affection for Chelsea, he appeared flabbergasted whenever a player looked to move on.‘Hilario is unbelievable at cutting clips from training and showing you where you’ve improved ever so slightly in goalkeeping terms,’ ex-Chelsea keeper Marcus Bettinelli said. ‘It’s stuff that the outfielders or people watching might not see.’We won’t see much of the five behind Tuchel but the FA must hope what has been forged between them can nudge England over the line.
