LAKE ORION, Mich. — A little over a year ago, former Lions center Frank Ragnow sent shockwaves around Detroit when he announced his retirement at just 29 years old, as he realized his body could no longer handle the physical toll required to play in the NFL.Private in nature, Ragnow always seemed the type to return home to Minnesota and spend his days being one with nature. For a while, that’s what happened.Ragnow remained out of the spotlight, grappling with his newfound chapter. The time away, however, brought both relief and discomfort. He could rest, but the thought of watching his QB take hits and his teammates struggle without him led to a guilt he couldn’t shake. He attempted a November comeback, although it failed to materialize because of an injury more severe than Ragnow realized — a Grade 3 hamstring strain. Now, able to reflect on it all, Ragnow considers that setback a sign.“I was just trying to will myself to play,” Ragnow said Friday at his annual Rags Remembered Foundation event. “I was, and my body was telling me otherwise. I was just, like, in paralysis, if you will. I did not plan on retiring in the middle of summer, believe it or not. It was like — I was trying to get, like, ‘You can do it for the guys, for the fans. It’s who you are.’ But it’s just … like, I was uncomfortable. And it’s one of those things where you have a couple of kids — and I don’t want a sob story, I’m okay, I’m going to be completely fine — but it’s one of those … ‘Is the juice worth the squeeze?’ things.“To me, ultimately, it came down to that decision. And obviously, I struggled with that decision, too.
