Health and Family Welfare Minister and Mangaluru MLA U. T. Khader on Friday, asked local Congress leaders to select committed party workers as booth level agents (BLAs) to enrol voters effectively during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral roll.Addressing the party workers during his maiden visit to the District Congress Committee office in the city after joining Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar’s Cabinet, Mr. Khader said that BLAs should ensure that voters submit all required documents during the SIR.“I call upon the party leaders to judiciously choose BLAs. Only those committed to the party work should be made BLAs. Do not repent later when BLAs abdicate from doing the work at the last minute,” he said.Mr. Khader said party workers should do more ground work and enrol more new voters towards the party. “Make them aware of Congress work and philosophy and point out failures of the Central government and the BJP.”Recalling the days when the party asked him to become Speaker, Mr. Khader said he readily agreed. “Only matter I regretted (when he was Speaker) was the ban on visiting the party office, which I had followed since I was 16 years.” Mr. Khader also recalled the days when he and a few other party workers went on a campaign from Mangaluru to Bidar in a jeep.He asked party workers to work for the party with patience and ensure victory of Congress in 2028 Assembly elections and coming elections to local bodies. The party will definitely recognise the work and reward hard workers, he said.Mr. Khader cited his own example, and examples of new KPCC president B. K. Hariprasad and of P. V. Mohan, who has been fielded in the June 18 election of the Karnataka Legislative Council. Published - June 12, 2026 09:47 pm IST
