India on Friday summoned a senior US diplomat for the second time in three days, after missile strikes on commercial vessels killed three of its nationals and forced the rescue of dozens of crew members off the coast of Oman.New Delhi called in US charge d’affaires Jason Meeks again on Friday, following a previous summoning on Wednesday, to lodge a “strong protest” over the attacks – rare diplomatic steps against its strategic partner in recent years.“Such actions are unacceptable and undermine the safety, security and stability of international maritime commerce in a sensitive region at a difficult time,” the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Friday.A US military missile strike on the Palau-flagged M/T Settebello on Tuesday tore through the engine room and triggered a fire. Out of 28 crew members on board, 24 were Indian nationals, 21 were rescued, while three lost their lives.In a response to the South China Morning Post on Friday, the US Central Command once again blamed the vessel for failing to “comply with directions from US forces”.“We issued warnings before the disabling shots,” a US official said.
