June 12 (UPI) -- The board of trustees at the Kennedy Center has appealed a court order to remove President Donald Trump's name from the venue by a Friday deadline.

On Thursday the board asked U.S. District Judge Casey Cooper for the District of Columbia to pause his order from May 29 saying the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts must remove Trump's name, The New York Times reported. That order also blocked plans to shutter the venue for two years for renovations.

The Kennedy Center's board of trustees voted in December to add Trump's name to the building. The decision came less than a year after Trump dismissed the entire board and named new board members, who in turn elected him chairman.

"Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it," Cooper wrote.
