FOLLOWING oversight visits to police stations in Durban, DA member Mzamo Billy raises alarming concerns about the shortage of rape kits and the stations' preparedness to handle sexual violence cases.

Billy, the DA's National Council of Provinces member, conducted oversight visits at Inanda, Durban Central and Phoenix police stations, where serious concerns were raised regarding the availability of rape kits and the readiness of these stations to respond effectively to cases of sexual violence.

He said there were credible and urgent allegations of rape-kit shortages at specific Durban stations, against a national supply-chain crisis and confirmed parliamentary concern about kit availability.

Billy’s findings led the DA Women’s Network to embark on an oversight campaign to assess whether police stations in KZN are properly capacitated to deal with gender-based violence and sexual offences following the rape kit shortage crisis.
