The Karnataka government has approved the establishment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Learning Laboratories in 50 government colleges in tier-2 and 3 cities of the State.The laboratories will provide students with hands-on exposure to AI, machine learning, data science, and other emerging fields through practical training, skill development programmes and innovation-oriented learning.Beyond major urban centres“The future of employment will be shaped by technology, and it is imperative that opportunities to acquire these skills are accessible beyond major urban centres. Through these AI laboratories, we are enabling students in tier-2 and tier-3 regions to gain hands-on exposure to emerging technologies, build industry-relevant capabilities and participate meaningfully in the digital economy,” said Priyank Kharge, Minister for Home, Information Technology, Biotechnology and e-Governance.In his last Budget, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced a ₹10 crore grant for the initiative which would be implemented in partnership with the Union government’s IndiaAI Mission, to impart necessary skills to the rural youth to make them employable.First phase rolloutThe State government has approved the selection of 23 educational institutions in the first phase for the establishment of the AI labs.Under the Government of India’s AI Mission, each laboratory will receive financial assistance of ₹68.98 lakh over a period of three years, to be released in three instalments.In addition, the State government has approved ₹10 crore to support the initiative, of which ₹6.29 crore will be released during the first year.
