(Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage)WireImageThroughout much of the spring of 2026, Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" has ranked as not only one of his biggest hits, or even one of the most successful R&B tunes in America, but one of the most-consumed songs, period. The decades-old smash has reached new heights and conquered various tallies since Jackson's semi-self-titled biopic Michael became a box office smash. There is one roster, however, where "Billie Jean" has yet to dominate, though it has come frustratingly close to doing so during multiple weeks. Once again, "Billie Jean" is denied the summit on a sales ranking once more as one champion backtracks and another blocks the King of Pop from a new ruler."Billie Jean" Misses No. 1 AgainOn this week's R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart, which ranks the top-selling tracks classified by Billboard as hip-hop, R&B or rap, "Billie Jean" climbs from No. 4 to No. 2. The Thriller single originally reached second place – which continues to stand as its all-time high – less than a month ago, on the chart dated May 23. Since then, several bestsellers have stood in the way of the beloved powerhouse doubling his total number of winners.Bruno Mars Blocks "Billie Jean" From Finally Hitting No. 1This time around, Bruno Mars returns to the throne with "I Just Might," the lead single from his recently released album The Romantic. "I Just Might" debuted at No. 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart in January, and since then has spent an incredible 12 frames as the bestselling track in any of those styles on platforms such as iTunes throughout America.MORE FOR YOURob Base and Drake Recently Sat at No. 1Last week, Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock sent their decades-old favorite "It Takes Two" to No. 1. The single exploded in popularity following Base’s passing, years after DJ EZ Rock’s death. The frame prior, Drake earned another champion with "Janice STFU." That single, taken from his album Iceman – one of three full-lengths he delivered less than a month ago – opened in the highest rung on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales tally, becoming his twenty-eighth leader at the same time that it also conquered the Billboard Hot 100. One week before "Janice STFU" launched at No. 1, artificial intelligence music project Eddie Dalton – which is not a real person – held at No. 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart with "Somewhere Along the Way." That track blocked "Billie Jean" from the top space, and since then, until this period, Jackson's time-tested tune has been forced to settle for either third or fourth place.Michael Jackson Has Charted Only One Sales LeaderJackson has only conquered the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart once, and "Thriller" has now racked up half a dozen stays in the penthouse. That song, taken from the massively successful album of the same name, debuted on the roster in 2010, and it waited a decade before finally moonwalking all the way to No. 1 in the fall of 2020. "Billie Jean" is tied with "Don't Matter to Me," Jackson's posthumous collaboration with Drake, which similarly failed to rule by just one slot."Billie Jean" Rules One Billboard ChartAt the moment, "Billie Jean" only appears at No. 1 on a single roster, the R&B Streaming Songs tally. The track keeps at No. 2, its all-time high, on both the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales and R&B Digital Song Sales lists, while simultaneously dropping from that same number to third place on the Billboard Global Excl.
