Olivia Rodrigo‘s third album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love,” is finally here — and with it comes a raft of new lyrics to quote, analyze and obsess over.
As the title suggests, “You Seem Pretty Sad” takes listeners through the lifespan of a relationship, from giddy beginnings full of butterflies (“Drop Dead,” “Stupid Song”) to the first thoughts of doubt (“Maggots for Brains,” “My Way”) and finally, its bitter end (“Less,” “Cigarette Smoke”).
“The record is a time capsule of a relationship in all its highs and lows,” Rodrigo wrote in a message to fans on Instagram after the album’s release. “It’s my attempt at capturing love from both sides of the coin. The hope and the disappointment. The insanity and the clarity. The entanglement and the unraveling.”
Indeed, the album’s lyrics are heartbreaking, honest and at times scathing as Rodrigo realizes that the relationship is actually what’s making her unhappy. Though “You Seem Pretty Sad” is ballad-heavy and full of reflection, it also contains some of Rodrigo’s signature wit and humor — especially on more upbeat tracks like “My Way” and “Expectations” — plus plenty of specific references that make it easy to guess which young British actor she might be writing all these songs about.
