Discussions on the 'own resources' have stalled at the technical level due to deep disagreements among capitals, Euractiv has learned
The European Commission has asked EU capitals to propose new EU-wide taxes to help plug funding gaps in the bloc’s next long-term budget, as its own revenue package fails to command broad support among member states.
The proposal for the 2028-2034 budget includes five new EU-wide revenue streams, along with changes to existing ones, expected to raise around €58 billion a year.
But most of the proposals have run into resistance, according to an EU diplomat, leaving talks stalled at technical level amid deep disagreement.
“EU member states did not buy the Commission’s argument that the own resources proposal should be taken as a package,” the diplomat said, adding that many governments regard the measures as “regressive”.
