If you’re an American looking for an extra rooting interest this World Cup — you know, beyond patriotism — this is the place for you. History says the odds are definitely not in the USMNT’s favor to win it all. But that doesn’t mean you should miss out on the fun.We got the betting team together to give you a couple of USA-related futures bets that are fun, realistic and not overly dependent on them winning the whole thing. Are they the sharpest bets? We aren’t saying that. But they’ll get you bleeding red, white and blue, and give you a reason to follow the USMNT throughout the tournament. So, without further ado, here are five of our betting picks on the USMNT during the tournament.U.S. to reach semifinals (+800, FanDuel)Mike Hume: Call me Lloyd Christmas if you want. That’s fair. After all, the U.S. hasn’t made it past the quarterfinals since the year humankind discovered Pluto. (That would be 1930, in case you didn’t know.) In the time since, the American men (and Pluto) have seen their profiles diminished. But America is a place of optimism, and on home soil, could I see a breakthrough? Probably not, honestly. But if it happens, I’d have a few more reasons to smile.U.S. to get exactly 4 points in the group (+360, FanDuel)Dan Santaromita: I am bearish on the U.S. compared to most of my compatriots. I thought picking four points for a host team at a World Cup, especially against this group, was going to be a long-shot bet. Turns out it’s only +360 and the second-shortest price of the possible points the U.S. could get from Group D. So I feel vindicated, but also feel like this isn’t a bet I would make at this price. For the sake of content, I’m sticking with it though. A draw against Paraguay, a win against Australia and a loss to Turkey. That should get the Americans out of the group at least.
