As of 29 May, new rules are in force regarding the deduction of penalty points from drivers’ licenses for traffic violations. Until now, an electronic ticket resulted only in a fine—depending on how much the speed limit was exceeded—without any penalty points being taken. Points were deducted only when a formal violation report was issued.

Under the new rules, if a speed camera records a driver exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 km/h in an urban area, the penalty will now include not only a €306.76 fine, but also the deduction of 18 penalty points. Previously, the same offense led to the loss of 12 points, and only if a formal report was drawn up. In addition, drivers will now face a two-month license suspension.

The changes follow amendments to Ordinance No. Iз-2539 of the Ministry of Interior, published in issue 49 of the State Gazette and effective from 29 May 2026. The ordinance regulates the maximum number of penalty points and the exact conditions under which they are deducted and restored.

Previously, a common legal loophole allowed drivers committing minor offenses—sanctioned on the spot with a ticket—to pay only a fine, without affecting their penalty point balance. With the new provisions, authorities aim to tighten control and improve road discipline.
