Irvette van Zyl is excitedly nervous ahead of her maiden Comrades Marathon Up Run this weekend. A renowned specialist of tough, hilly courses, the Hollywood Athletics Club starlet will be doing her back-to-back in the Ultimate Human Race having finished a credible fourth on debut in the Down Run last year.
"Yes, I am excited about my first Up Run but more nervous because I now know how hard the Comrades Marathon is," Van Zyl said during an interview in the coastal city.
"It does excite me but, when I look at the course profile and the description of it, it scares me a bit because it is really long hills and some of them are steep. Yes, I know I'm strong on hills, but I've never done hills like this. So it's going to be a good test for me and I'm excited for it but also a bit scared."
That state of mind is a good thing for an athlete going into the unknown. It is often a sign that one is taking the task seriously.
