Unemployed young people will be told to go to football stadiums and other community facilities instead of job centres for help to find work under a new government scheme.
Welfare secretary Pat McFadden said a total of 360 ‘youth hubs’ will be opened across Britain over the next three years – taking inspiration from a similar scheme in the Netherlands, which has seen youth unemployment rates plummet.
The number of NEETs – 16 to 24-year-olds not in education, employment or training – has risen in the UK since the Covid pandemic and surpassed one million for the first time since 2013 earlier this year.

McFadden, speaking on a visit to a technical training college near Rotterdam, told The i Paper that the Government’s ambition is that every young person will be less than an hour away from a youth hub by public transport in their area.
