Sir, – I read with interest your recent article on the proposed rezoning of St Edmundsbury in Lucan (“Builder urges councillors to rezone Liffey Valley site,” June 11th).While the need for housing is undeniable, not every undeveloped space should be viewed solely as a development opportunity. St Edmundsbury is one of the few remaining natural areas in a suburb that has already accommodated substantial growth. It provides biodiversity, recreation, floodplain protection and a connection to nature that cannot simply be replaced by landscaping or newly created parkland. As we face a housing crisis and biodiversity crisis, surely the question is not how much more land can be developed, but whether some places are valuable precisely because they remain undeveloped. – Yours, etc,JULIEANN BYRNE,Lucan, Co Dublin.
Land rezoning not as clear-cut as it might appear
