It’s looking like a tough job market for teens this summer. The unemployment rate for 16- to 19-year-olds sits close to 15% — which is higher than it was ahead of last summer. Despite the labor market conditions, some of today’s teens don’t think working as a camp counselor for the summer is a good idea, as Alina Dizik recently wrote for Bloomberg. She spoke with “Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal about how career anxiety is changing summer camps. “Teenagers are hesitant about working in summer camps because there is so much emphasis on what you’re doing in the summer in terms of internships or summer jobs that can really build your resume for college and beyond,” Dizik said. Camps are now offering internship-like experiences, like helping counselors with their resumes, letting them intern in the social media department, or building out camp alumni networks.
