TORONTO — Canada’s captain and Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies will not play in Canada’s World Cup opener.Canada head coach Jesse Marsch made the announcement during a news conference before their June 12 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.Davies’ availability has been a constant topic of debate since he arrived in the Canada camp on June 1. Davies and Marsch had not previously stated publicly whether or not the star player would be recovered from a hamstring injury sustained during Bayern’s Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 6 .“We did an MRI with (Davies) yesterday,” Marsch said Thursday. “It showed very positive signs that he’s healing incredibly well, almost completely. We’re getting ready to ramp things up. I think that he’s showing, like he always has, a real good ability to recover from muscle injuries.”Due to an ACL tear, other injuries and fatigue, Davies has played just two of Canada’s last 21 games.Davies did not attend the first week of Canada’s World Cup training camp in Charlotte, North Carolina. Since arriving, Davies has largely trained on his own with Matthias Blankenburg, an independent specialist trainer. This arrangement has been part of Davies’ return to play protocol, as agreed upon by Bayern, Davies and Canada Soccer.Marsch did not rule out the possibility that Davies would play later in Canada’s group stage.“I think that having (Davies’) private physio here has been very helpful, and the concentration on his body’s needs every day,” Marsch said. “And so we are really hopeful that over the next days and week that we can accelerate things and give him a chance to contribute here soon.”
