Twenty-eight-year-old Kemar Mitchell is scheduled to appear before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on July 17 to answer a murder charge in connection with the stabbing of 13-year-old Excelsior High School student Kemelia Paul.Mitchell, a carpenter of Harbour Heights, Harbour View in St Andrew was formally charged with murder on Wednesday, one day after Kemelia died in hospital from injuries she sustained during an incident at her home on May 9.According to the police, Mitchell went to the child's home on Everest Drive, Harbour View, where an argument developed between him and a relative of the child. Investigators said the dispute escalated into a physical confrontation and Kemelia intervened.Police allege that Mitchell then used a knife to stab the teenager in the stomach before leaving the premises.Kemelia was rushed to hospital, where she remained for weeks in critical condition, including a period in a coma. Her death triggered an outpouring of grief across the country after her struggle for survival captured national attention.In the weeks before her death, relatives had expressed cautious optimism after Kemelia emerged from a coma and showed signs of improvement.Speaking to The Gleaner on Tuesday, her mother, Josephine Mitchell, said she had visited her daughter earlier that day and was told by doctors that Kemelia had developed an infection.
