79.8 percent of your fellow readers believe Russell Wilson is not a Hall of Fame quarterback. The other 20.1 percent are wrong. Mike Sando made both arguments here.Today we’re talking about a different quarterback. A 30-year-old who, in just nine seasons (eight if you skip his redshirt rookie year), already has a Hall of Fame resume. Mahomes is currently ahead of where the greatest-ever quarterback was at this point in his own career:To be fair, Tom Brady also sat out his rookie season, plus missed all of his ninth. Still, if Mahomes can win some more rings, he has a legit chance to be considered the best quarterback in NFL history. So what comes next should come as no surprise. This article is from The Athletic’s NFL newsletter. Sign up here to receive it directly in your inbox. It’s free to subscribe. Mahomes gets historic payday (again)Yesterday, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs agreed to a historic contract extension. His updated deal, originally signed in 2020, now has a record total value of $504.75 million. This keeps him in Kansas City* through 2033, with an average per-year pay of $64 million once the new money begins in 2027.* That will partly be Kansas City, Kan., not to be confused with Kansas City, Mo., which the Chiefs are exiting in 2031.As The Athletic’s reporters explain in our story on the gigantic extension, this agreement adds two years to Mahomes’ deal and is the first time the team has added either years or money to it. It will make him the highest-paid quarterback on an annual basis:Also, you probably didn’t realize it, but the cover photo is of Mahomes at practice yesterday. He had surgery in mid-December for a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee. Yet there he’s been, participating throughout organized team activities and mandatory minicamp the last few weeks. He’s said he plans to play Week 1 against the Broncos, which the NFL conveniently scheduled as late as possible (Monday night). I might not cheer for the Chiefs, but I sure hope we get to see him starting again ASAP.
