PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss on Thursday urged the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to immediately release the May salaries of contract healthcare workers employed at urban primary health centres. He said in a statement that contract doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff had staged a protest outside the Ripon Building, alleging that their May salaries had not been paid even 10 days after the due date.Pointing out that the protest had affected medical services at urban primary health centres across Chennai from Thursday morning, he said the public should not suffer because of administrative lapses. While various reasons, including technical issues in a software application, were reportedly cited for the delay, Dr. Anbumani said withholding wages from workers who had already rendered their services was unjust and amounted to a violation of their rights. He urged the GCC to release the pending salaries without further delay and called upon both the State government and the civic body to address the workers’ other demands, including job security.
