A court in Aigio, in the northern Peloponnese, has sentenced James Dalamangas, one of Australia’s most wanted fugitives, to two years and nine months in prison for weapons-law violations and giving false testimony.

The sentence was suspended pending appeal, meaning it will not be enforced until a second-degree trial is held.

Dalamangas, 55, was arrested earlier this week at a rural property near the seaside town of Aigio after a major police operation, ending a nearly 27-year manhunt.

He remains in custody while Greek judicial authorities consider Australia’s request for his extradition.

The Aigio court also convicted an 86-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman, who were arrested alongside the fugitive, of harboring a criminal. Both received prison sentences, but their appeals were granted suspensive effect until the case is heard by a higher court.
