Jose Mourinho has returned to Real Madrid as head coach, 13 years after leaving the club.He has signed a three-year deal and returns to the Bernabeu for a second spell in charge, replacing Alvaro Arbeloa — who the club announced on Wednesday had agreed to leave. Madrid’s announcement on Thursday said Mourinho will join on July 13, when pre-season begins.Earlier this week, Benfica said they had informed Portugal’s CMVM — the independent regulatory authority responsible for overseeing the nation’s financial markets — that Madrid had indicated its intention to pay Mourinho’s €15million (£12.9m, $17.3m) release clause.A break clause in Mourinho’s Benfica contract of around €6m (£5.2m; $7m) was valid for 10 working days following the end of their season and expired on May 29. Madrid did not trigger this due to the club’s presidential election and The Athletic reported that they would instead have to pay up to his increased €15m clause to appoint him.Mourinho will be replaced at Benfica by Marco Silva, who has agreed a two-year deal with the Lisbon-based club, with the option of an extra 12 months, having ended his five-year spell at Fulham.The Athletic first reported on April 28 that Mourinho, 63, was the favoured head coach candidate of Madrid president Florentino Perez, who was re-elected on Sunday.
