PITTSBURGH — Welcome to my second Pittsburgh Penguins June mailbag. Don’t miss Wednesday’s Part 1 here. Thanks for all the questions. They were terrific, as always. And the first question appeals to my childhood, which I always love.Away we go.Who wins in this tournament of the greatest Penguins teams? No. 1 seed: 1992-93 Penguins vs. No. 8 seed: 2013-14 Penguins No. 4 seed: 2008-09 Penguins vs. No. 5 seed: 2015-16 Penguins No. 6 seed: 2011-12 Penguins vs. No. 3 seed: 1991-92 Penguins No. 2 seed: 2016-17 Penguins vs. No. 7 seed: 1990-91 Penguins — @gggiants I’m not sure about all the seeds here, but that’s neither here nor there. Let’s break it down.Quarterfinals1992-93 Penguins in 5 over 2013-14 PenguinsThere was something stale about the ’13-14 Penguins and, well, this wouldn’t be much of a contest.2015-16 Penguins in 7 over 2008-09 PenguinsI had so much trouble with this one. Talk about a coin flip. But I believe the ’15-16 Penguins were the most dominant team of the Sidney Crosby era.1991-92 Penguins in 5 over 2011-12 PenguinsNot much defense will be played in this one, but the ’11-12 Penguins, for all their talent, didn’t have the will to match.2016-17 Penguins in 7 over 1990-91 PenguinsAnother brutal one, but Jaromir Jagr was still a kid, and Mario Lemieux’s back was terrible that year.Semifinals2015-16 Penguins in 7 over the 1992-93 Penguins “But wait a second!” you say. “The ’92-93 Penguins were the best Penguins team ever!” No, they weren’t. More on this later.1991-92 Penguins in 6 over the 2016-17 Penguins Missing the injured Letang in 2017 — and that was prime Letang — would have been too much to overcome.Final1991-92 Penguins in 6 over 2015-16 PenguinsI have the deepest respect for the three Crosby championship teams, and 2015-16 was the best of them. But the 1992 Penguins are the greatest team in franchise history. Peak Lemieux. No human being has ever played hockey better than he did in the 1992 playoffs. If you don’t believe me, find some of the games on YouTube and tell me for yourself. Jagr really came into his own that spring. Peak Kevin Stevens. Peak Ron Francis. Peak Rick Tocchet. I could go on and on. You win your last 11 consecutive playoff games to win the Cup, and you stand alone.Favorite Pittsburgh sports championship, not including any Stanley Cups? — @cgibson724Well, Chuck, this narrows my options. I was born in 1980, so I’ve never seen the Pittsburgh Pirates win a championship. I’m also aware I probably never will. Sigh. So, I’d have to focus on the 2005 Steelers. Given the year I was born, I missed out on seeing the 1970s dynasty. But when you’re growing up in Pittsburgh in the 1980s and ’90s, all you ever hear about is those ’70s teams. I always wanted to see the Steelers finally win one, and they finally did in the magical 2005 season. So, that’s an easy choice. That team had Steelers legends Jerome Bettis, Hines Ward, Troy Polamalu, Alan Faneca, Joey Porter and a young quarterback who changed everything. Plus, I’m a big Bill Cowher guy. They were 7-5 before ripping off eight straight wins, including three straight on the road, just to reach the Super Bowl. So, yes, I loved that team, and that would be my choice. What’s the status of the Penguins sale? Will Mario really become involved with the team again when and if it happens? — @suemccaugheyI wrote about it last week. All indications are that the sale will be completed sometime this summer, perhaps as early as this month. The Hoffmann family would love for Lemieux to be involved in some capacity, and I believe there is a real possibility he will be.
