OTTAWA—Canada’s privacy commissioner has found that X’s AI image tool Grok allowed users around the world to create sexualized deepfakes of women and children because it was launched without proper safeguards.

X, formerly known as Twitter, launched Grok in late 2023 and gradually rolled it out across the world. The service allows users to create realistic images with only text prompts. The commissioner launched an investigation in January after reports that the tool has been used to create millions of sexualized deepfakes.
