Experts say ceramides help the skin retain moisture, defend against environmental stressors and create the conditions needed for other skincare products to work effectively.
For years, skincare shoppers have been drawn to ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol and hyaluronic acid in the hope of achieving brighter, smoother and younger-looking skin.
But according to a recent survey of dermatologists, the ingredient that may matter most for long-term skin health is one that rarely enjoys the same spotlight.
A June 2026 survey conducted by skincare brand Skinara asked 63 board-certified dermatologists which ingredients they most often recommend for concerns ranging from ageing and pigmentation to acne and sensitive skin.
When asked to identify the single most important ingredient for long-term skin health, most pointed to ceramides.
