Bulgaria’s National Assembly has approved new rules prohibiting economically unjustified increases in consumer prices and obliging large retailers to publish their prices online every day. The measures were adopted at second reading through amendments to the Consumer Protection Act.

Under the new provisions, any increase in the prices of goods or services offered to consumers must be economically justified. When a price hike is identified, supervisory authorities will assess its scale, duration, and circumstances, and will set a deadline by which the trader must prove the economic grounds for the increase. Failure to do so will result in the price rise being deemed unjustified.

Economic justification will be evaluated by comparing the price increase with changes in costs or other relevant factors affecting the trader’s business activity.
