FRISCO, Texas — Wearing a black cowboy hat, an all-white, three-piece suit and a bolo tie, DeMarvion Overshown married his longtime girlfriend, Alexis Babino, in Tyler, Texas, on Saturday. He was back at the Dallas Cowboys practice facility a few days later for their second week of organized team activities.“I got married,” the fourth-year linebacker said after Tuesday’s practice. “I secured that bag. S—, now it’s time to go get that Super Bowl ring. I got my wedding ring. Now it’s time to go get that Super Bowl ring. It’s ring season.”Overshown was getting work at middle and weakside linebacker during Tuesday’s practice. That’s notable because he’s been mostly a weakside linebacker during the previous three years. Under new defensive coordinator Christian Parker, Dallas is looking for even more leadership from one of its top playmaking defenders.Overshown is now in the mix with Dee Winters as the favorites to wear the green dot during the season. Only one player on the field can have the radio in his helmet, which is marked with a green dot sticker. The radio speaker in the helmet receives the calls directly from Parker. That player then shares the play call with his other 10 teammates on the field. The job fits best with a player who is always on the field and viewed as one of the team’s leaders.Of course, Overshown has to be healthy to be on the field. He has missed 32 games over the last three seasons because of injuries, most notably to his knees. Overshown is no longer wearing a knee brace on the field.“I got the best knees in the NFL if you ask me,” he said. “They’re brand new. Technology these days is crazy, so I feel great. The fact that I’m healthy going into the season, going into training camp, you can expect a lot from me.”Why does he like the idea of getting more work at middle linebacker?“I’m protected on both sides,” he said, “so now I can just play free.”For the Cowboys to significantly improve from last season, when they had arguably the worst defense in franchise history, several players need to have big years. The names that immediately come to mind are defensive backs Caleb Downs, Jalen Thompson and DaRon Bland, defensive tackles Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark, and outside linebackers Rashan Gary and Donovan Ezeiruaku. The injury issues have somewhat made Overshown a forgotten man, but what if he can stay healthy while playing free in the middle of the defense? The closest he came to a full season was in 2024, when he played in 13 games, totaling 90 tackles, five sacks, eight tackles for loss, a forced fumble and interception returned for a touchdown. His play led to franchise quarterback Dak Prescott calling Overshown his favorite player.“That (middle linebacker) role fits me,” Overshown said. “People look at me as a mike (linebacker). … I’ve been wanting to be the mike since my rookie year. I felt like there was going to come a time where I wore the (captain) C on my chest and I had the green dot. Now I got it, so I’m excited.”Availability will be the biggest factor. Because that has been an issue for Overshown, inside linebacker is the most questionable position group on the team. There’s a reason the Cowboys made a run at signing some of the top inside linebackers in free agency. They missed out there and early in the draft.“Certainly no one wants to play the game more than him, I can assure you of that,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said of Overshown in February. “But obviously, he needs to put together a full season. And if he does, I think it’s going to be a great season, because I know how good he is and what he can do for us. (We’re) fired up about what he brings to the table.“The only question mark he has is his injury issues that he’s had and getting through a full year.”Overshown can be a Pro-Bowl player. His personality fits well for a vocal leader. Now, he just has to put it together for a full season. And if he does, the 2023 third-round pick has the opportunity to make himself a lot of money, as this is his contract year.“I’m not even worried about that, to be honest,” he said. “I got to play football. I’m going to get paid if I play good football.”
