Canada’s government has introduced proposed legislation that would ban young people under 16 from social media platforms unless they meet safety requirements, in the latest move by a government to try to reduce online youth harms.

The proposals introduced on Wednesday would also impose safety standards on AI platforms, but AI companies do not face a youth ban.

The proposed measure would require social media platforms and AI companies “to do more to protect children” and make their services “safe by design”, said culture minister Marc Miller at a news conference.
