Rubendra Govender served as an actor, screenwriter, director, and film-maker

Rubendra Govender has been immersed in a project that has consumed his passion: the film adaptation of his acclaimed novel, Sugar Cane Boy, which is set to premiere on July 2 at Suncoast CineCentre in Durban.

Govender, of Reservoir Hills, who turned 60 last month, said Sugar Cane Boy was originally published in 2008 and the tale was rooted in the South African sugar farming communities of Inanda, where he grew up.

He said the film idea developed over many years because he always believed it had strong cinematic potential.

This endeavour will now mark a significant transition in his career: from teacher to film-maker.
