Sony Pictures is officially developing 24 Jump Street, reviving one of the studio’s most successful comedy franchises with Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube in talks to return. The project will be directed by Rodney Rothman, who is also co-writing the screenplay alongside Hill and Meghan Malloy. Rothman previously worked on 22 Jump Street and won an Academy Award for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.While story details remain under wraps, the sequel marks the first major movement on the franchise since 22 Jump Street released in 2014. The new title has already sparked curiosity among fans, given that the series appears to have skipped directly past 23 Jump Street. Producer Neal H. Moritz joked about the numbering on social media, suggesting the lengthy development process may have been responsible for the missing instalment.Original filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who directed both 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street, will return as producers alongside Moritz. Hill and Tatum are also producing through their respective companies. The franchise began with 21 Jump Street in 2012, adapting the 1980s television series into a self-aware action-comedy. Hill’s Schmidt and Tatum’s Jenko were introduced as mismatched police officers assigned to go undercover at a high school to investigate a drug operation. Ice Cube played the short-tempered Captain Dickson, who oversaw the programme. The first film earned more than $200 million worldwide and became an unexpected critical and commercial success. Its sequel, which relocated the undercover duo to a college campus, performed even better at the global box office and cemented the franchise as one of Hollywood’s standout comedy properties of the 2010s.Over the years, multiple sequel ideas surfaced, including a proposed crossover with Men in Black, though none ultimately moved forward.
