More than 100 students, government officials, industry representatives, community members, and conservation partners gathered on Wednesday to celebrate World Ocean Day with a special screening of Ocean with David Attenborough.
The event was co-hosted by Conservation International Samoa, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Samoa Voyaging Society. It highlighted the importance of protecting the ocean and passing traditional knowledge on to future generations.
The documentary explored the beauty of the world's oceans, the threats they face, and the hope for their recovery.
Samoa Voyaging Society President Leota Donna Ioane said young people must be taught to care for the ocean, just as their ancestors did.
"We learned from the practices of our ancestors. Now, it is up to us as guardians and keepers of wayfinding to show our young people how to care for the ocean, as soon it will be theirs to protect," she said.
