Dairy debt has fallen by almost $5 billion since its 2018 peak, with repayments resulting from Fonterra's sale of its Mainland brands yet to be factored in.
Andrew Laming, co-founder and director of agri-finance advisory NZAB (New Zealand Agri Brokers), said the national dairy debt was now sitting around $36 billion.
"There's been a considerable drop in debt, but also more noticeably so against productivity as well - over that time, debt per kilo has moved from $22 debt per kilo to $18.50."
Laming expected this to close further once the Fonterra brand sale payments had been factored in, with expectations it would sit around $16.50 of debt per kilo.
