India’s existing laws for information technology were framed much before the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Tuesday, adding that he believes a new legal framework may be required to deal with the changing landscape.

His comments come at a time when policymakers across the globe are grappling with challenges posed by generative AI, including deepfakes, misinformation, and online harms.

India has been tightening IT rules to firmly crack down on AI deepfakes.

Elsewhere, the race to power AI data centres is seeing the emergence of unlikely players.
